Marilyn Conquering The World!
I was so psyched to get an email from Marcus at Fusion of Effects asking me to contribute more art to Dolce & Gabbana’s online luxury magazine, Swide. I’ve been featured on Swide a few times before- “Illustration That Rocks The Runway”, “SS 2012 Womenswear Collection”, “Illustrating Love”, and a really fun feature all about Lace!
Anyway! Marcus asked me to do some illustrations of the amazing Marilyn Monroe dressed in Dolce & Gabbana’s Fall 2012 collection. This was seriously one of the most fun projects I’ve ever had the pleasure of working on. I was obsessed with Marilyn back in my high school days- even to the point of lip-syncing “Diamonds Are A Girl’s Best Friend” in front of my bedroom mirror from time to time. Ha, I can’t believe I just admitted that to the public. Oh well, I was a sixteen year old art & fashion geek into old movies. Back to the point…Marilyn was so full of beauty & wit that she’s been emulated a zillion times by fans across the globe. Timeless, lovely beauty.
It was a hard task narrowing down outfits & iconic Marilyn poses- if I had the time I would have done ten more! (Add that to my personal projects to-do list!) I chose some of my favorite pieces to add to her sexy sweet poses. It was incredible fun dressing Marilyn in today’s looks- the collection is filled with lace & embroidery & ruffles- gorgeous & girly! I like to think that Marilyn would be delighted to wear these beautiful garments.
The illustration above is one of my faves. It’s inspired by one of Marilyn’s most iconic poses from the very first issue of Playboy Magazine in December 1953. I chose an intricate corset to illustrate, along with those shoes…those gorgeous shoes! I wanted a pose that would really show those beauties off, and this was it. I inked in some classic Marilyn quotes & that one just sums it up perfectly- Conquer the world she certainly did!
Please check out the rest of the art & interview here!

‘Makeup by Desiree’ Logo Illustration

‘Memos by Desiree’ Blog Header
Earlier this year I had the pleasure of working with Desiree Delia, a super sweet makeup artist here in NYC and Connecticut. She was looking for a fun illustration for her blog, Memos by Desiree. In it she wanted to convey her strength as a creative makeup artist (brushes in hand!), as well as her strength in business (Forbes Magazine in the other!) Along with the city skyline background, a little black dress & red pumps, Desiree is the total package! Check out her blog for pretty photos & tutorials!
I also worked on a logo for her website, Makeup By Desiree. I love doing little spot illustrations of makeup & accessories, so this was a fun one! I also love the personal touch that hand-lettering evokes. Fonts are fine, but ink is incredible!
So please check out her sites & if you ever need to get dolled up for an event, give Desiree a call!
Pretty, Pretty. xoxo

She's The Queen Of The "Cool Turq"!
I had a free night of painting on Saturday, which is a rarity these days. Summer is filled with client work and lots & lots of playtime camping & hanging out at the beach-so I took advantage of my night off to loosen up & get back into the groove of painting after being away in Aruba. While I LOVE my vacations and fun time, I couldn’t wait to get back & start creating again! I put on some of my favorite dance music (The Go-Gos!) and went to town on my quickies- gestural expressions that take only a minute or two to complete. They get to the heart of the look with just a few lines & a whole lot of attitude- definitely one of my favorite things to do! xoxo

90s Inky Goodness!
I’ve recently been organizing my new studio and discovering lots of old work I sort of forgot about! These were portfolio pieces from the mid- 90s: lots of drippy, yummy, inky awesomeness. It’s totally fun to see how my work has changed with the times & client demands, but these pieces have inspired me to get back to my super-loose roots! I’ve been experimenting a few times a week with what I like to call “quickies”- paintings done in less than five minutes, including drying time. It’s been an exciting addition to my regular work & I’ll be posting them here & on my facebook page for you guys to check out! xo

Sharon Needles!
I painted this gothy beauty a few weeks ago, but I finally have some time to update my (sadly neglected) blog! I’ve been a huge fan of RuPaul’s Drag Race since day one. The queens on that show are deeply inspiring, exciting and make me smile. You may remember one of my favorite gals from last year- Manila Luzon. Love her!
This year’s favorite is a sassy little freak named Sharon Needles. I’ve been rooting for her to win since the second I laid eyes on her. Totally original, smart and fun. I’ve never seen such a rad, punk rock queen like Sharon, so I obviously *had* to paint her! Shantay, she stays! xoxo

"Leather Lover" Jean Paul Gaultier F/W 2012
I first remember seeing Jean Paul Gaultier in Details magazine sometime in the mid-80s. I fell in love with his look & designs. This was the fantastic and better Details of NYC art & fashion- not the men’s mag it changed into long ago. Anyhow, Gaultier has rocked my senses since I was a teen, so I felt like painting this look from the recent Fall collection- it’s something I’d wear from head to platformed-toe. It’s so neat to think about what caught my eye then and how it still inspires me now. Go Go Gaultier! xo

Teaching a young student different acrylic techniques.
A while back I was contacted by Kerri Quigley, founder & instructor of The Fashion Class, asking if I was interested in doing a guest teaching spot one afternoon. Totally! All of the students are interested in fashion on some level, so that rocks. Since I love acrylic paint & all of its many uses, I decided to teach the girls some fun techniques to work with. I spent the afternoon prior to the class creating black & white illustration templates for them to paint on directly…their own personal fashion coloring pages. That’s way more fun than a blank piece of paper. Since the class is only an hour, I settled on five techniques: Wet paper, Thick Acrylic, Acrylic as Watercolor, Dry Brush & Splatter Effect- those last two were definite faves! I had a blast teaching & the girls had a blast learning new ways to be creative. Win/Win! I’ll definitely be back at some point to teach them more art. I’ll keep you posted when that happens, and in the meantime, check out all the cool programs The Fashion Class has to offer! xoxo

"Frill And Lace!"
I wanted to illustrate some new runway looks today in between my regular client deadlines…and I came across this piece of awesomeness by Tadashi Shoji! Lace-like cutout fabric, sequins, tulle- a whole pile of girly goodness in a shimmery black dress! Add this to my wish-list! xoxo

Lilya Live Sketching!
I had such a fun time at the Lion’esque Media/Yelp Giftacular earlier this December. I sketched pretty much non-stop for eight hours since the place was jam-packed with shoppers! I can write a small novel about it, but Brandon over at Would You Rock This? did an amazing recap featuring lots of pictures & illustrations. Check it out here and stay tuned for more live- sketching events! xoxo

Vous Valet Logo
I recently had a fun job working on a logo for Vous Valet- a new high-end vintage shop in lovely Vancouver, British Columbia. The art direction was specific & concise…aka easy peasy…the owner wanted a sweet Audrey Hepburn-esque girl in a black vintage dress, posed in front of the Eiffel Tower with her cute little Pom by her side. Her hands are formed into two V’s – for the victory of finding an awesome frock at Vous Valet! The store’s grand opening is December 20th- just in time to pick up some last minute holiday goodies! You can check out the soon-to-be updated website here! Happy Shopping! xoxo
