Happy 13th Birthday, Maia!

Beautiful Miss Maia!

My good friend Jessica commissioned me to do an illustration of her daughter, Maia, for her 13th birthday earlier this month & I was more than happy to do it! Maia’s a fun young lady & one of my summer camping buddies! She’s super sweet, super smart & super beautiful, so I tried to incorporate all of those traits into this piece. It actually ended up being a tiny bit of a challenge since I’m so used to drawing sexier & sassier adults…I needed to keep this piece balanced & age-appropriate: not too young & not too overly grown-up. And it had to look like her! From the feedback I received, apparently I accomplished the task at hand- yay! Happy Birthday, Maia- may all your teenage dreams come true! xo

Daily Lilya in ‘Daily Brooklyn’ by Hilary McHone

Painting in my Bushwick studio, April 3, 2012. Photo by Hilary McHone.

I met the super sweet & talented photographer, Hilary McHone, through the ‘Work It Brooklyn’ Facebook page. She was looking for Brooklyn-based artists to photograph for a new project. Sign me up!

She came by my studio at my personal prime-time: 8am (Yay for Early Birds!) and spent a few hours taking pix of me working from all sorts of angles. We chatted about work, travel, Brooklyn and all sorts of fun stuff. I normally hate being disturbed while I’m painting, but Hilary’s a total pro who made it easy for me to work while she was.

Anyway, check out the Daily Brooklyn post for fun studio shots of what I do almost every day. Love my job & love meeting like-minded artistic Brooklynites! xo

Merry-Go-Astound!

I painted this Christmas present for my friend Abby’s daughter. Her name is Astrid, she’s in first grade, into girly stuff & her room is painted cotton candy pink. Awesome! I decided to go with inspiration from the Louis Vuitton S/S 2012 show- I thought the carousel backdrop was perfect for somebody Astrid’s age, while still being totally high fashion. And you can’t go wrong with a pink & yellow flowery frock! I’m thinking it’s a piece that she’ll appreciate now, as well as when she’s older. Merry Merry! xo

Lilya Live Sketching!

I had such a fun time at the Lion’esque Media/Yelp Giftacular earlier this December. I sketched pretty much non-stop for eight hours since the place was jam-packed with shoppers! I can write a small novel about it, but Brandon over at Would You Rock This? did an amazing recap featuring lots of pictures & illustrations. Check it out here and stay tuned for more live- sketching events! xoxo

Me & my pigtails, Live-sketching at the RS Pop Shop, NYC, November 30th, 2011 Photo by Steve Barkaszi

I had a blast live-sketching at the RS Pop Shop last week. I met a whole bunch of awesome people & their awesome puppies. All the sketch proceeds went directly to the Mayor’s Alliance for NYC’s Animals- a great organization that helps find “forever-homes” for cats & dogs that need them. For more photos & sketches, just check out my Facebook page here. For donation & animal adoption info, click here! Happy Monday! xoxo

Basil, October 2011

Or not. This is my little love cat, Basil. She’s the sweetest thing ever & loves to hang out under my warm drawing lamps. It never fails- every time I run downstairs to make a cup of tea (which is pretty much a 24/7 affair), she’ll jump up on my drawing table, taste the paint water (!) & take a catnap in the middle of my workspace. She meows in protest every time I move her to her other perch. All in a day’s work! xo
